About the Artist:

Introduction

“Although painting and drawing have been a passion since childhood, any related pursuits were eclipsed in my early academic years by science and technical studies. Art academics and studio work did not begin in earnest until 1970 when a growing interest and study of art history planted the seeds for a life change in 1987. In the intervening years I was obsessed with painting and studied visual art and traditional as well as more explorative painting techniques. It was an intensive period of continuing work in the technical field, raising a family, and finding time to study and paint.

I have been fortunate and give full credit to the many instructors, peers and friends who have encouraged and contributed to what I have learned and can apply in my personal journey as a painter.”

The Paintings

Working in oils or acrylics and other watermedia, Richard uses various forming processes and a random or explorative start in developing the visual image. A love of paint and creative process is evident in the energized surfaces that result.

Like the art of short story telling, I enjoy paintings that integrate human activity and surroundings in a visual narrative that invites the viewer in, to discover and explore, to complete the story or continue the inner journey or experience. I believe all physical form is “light and sound” – a vibration of creative and universal essence that we both experience and express in our daily endeavours. Painting is but one way to express our relationship with this essence or life force. In the painting process I hope in some way, to capture or bridge the physicality of our outer lives with the non visible current that flows through all life. I am continually fascinated by the movement of light, pattern and the interactive nature of colour that can be explored in developing a painting concept. ”
